Be the Light in a World of Darkness
Sometimes, there is a lot of darkness in this world. As I see it, you have two choices. You can be a part of that darkness, or you can be light. Be the light. – Tom Giaquinto
Every day, the news bombards us with reminders of the darkness in the world—violence, injustice, division, and suffering. It can feel like the shadows are closing in, suffocating us with despair. Feeling powerless and tempted to be cynical or indifferent is easy. Yet, even amidst this suffocating gloom, we are reminded that we have a choice. Tom Giaquinto’s words challenge us: We can contribute to the darkness or choose to be the light. But what does it mean to be light in a world shrouded in shadow?
Choosing to Be the Light
Being the light doesn’t mean ignoring the darkness or pretending it doesn’t exist. It doesn’t mean we put on blinders and walk through life oblivious to the pain and suffering around us. Instead, it means confronting the darkness with hope, kindness, and truth. It means reflecting on goodness daily, even when it’s hard or a struggle.
Light in Our Words – The way we speak to and about others matters. In a time when negativity and criticism dominate conversations, our words can be a beacon. Choosing words of encouragement and understanding can be like a warm blanket on a cold night, brightening someone’s day and reminding them they are not alone.
Light in Our Actions – A simple gesture, a small act of kindness—checking in on a friend, offering a warm smile that reaches their eyes, lending a helping hand—these can make a profound difference, breaking through the coldness of indifference with unexpected power.
Light in Our Choices – Being the light means standing up for what is right, even when it is unpopular; even when our voice shakes and our knees tremble. It means advocating for justice, treating others with respect, and embodying integrity in both public and private moments, even when no one is watching. It’s about choosing the harder right over the easier wrong.
Light in Our Presence – Sometimes, just showing up and being there for someone in pain is enough. Light does not always mean fixing everything; sometimes, it is simply about being present, offering comfort and solidarity, a silent shoulder to lean on, a hand to hold in the darkness.
The Challenge: Will You Choose to Be the Light?
The world is in need of light-bearers—those who bring love where there is hate, peace where there is strife, and hope where there is despair. Each of us has the capacity to be that light, to ignite a spark of hope in another soul. The question is: will we choose to be?
It’s easy to fall into the trap of thinking, “What difference can I make?” We may feel small and insignificant in the face of overwhelming darkness. But history shows us that light spreads. A single flame can illuminate a dark room. One act of kindness can ripple outward in ways we may never see, touching lives and inspiring hope in the most unexpected corners.
Where is the darkness in your life? Where can you shine your light?
So today, as you read the headlines, as you scroll through social media, as you interact with the people around you—choose the light. Choose kindness over cruelty. Choose understanding over judgment. Choose hope over despair. And in doing so, you may just inspire others to do the same, creating a chain reaction of light that pushes back the shadows.
The world may be dark, but it does not have to stay that way. Let’s be the light that breaks through the darkness, one choice at a time. In this, we echo the very words of Jesus, who calls us to be the light of the world, illuminating the path for others.
