We Are Born of Love: Love Is Our Mother – A Reflection for Mother’s Day
“We are born of love; Love is our mother.”
Rumi
As Mother’s Day approaches, we pause to honor the women who brought us into the world, nurtured us, guided us, and shaped us with their strength and tenderness. This day is not only a celebration of mothers but also a reflection on what motherhood represents: love in its most selfless and enduring form.
Rumi’s words remind us that love is both our origin and our destiny. When we say that love is our mother, we are recognizing a deeper truth about our identity. We are not just physical beings. At our core, we are made of love. Love gave us life, surrounds us with possibility, and calls us to live with compassion.
For many of us, our first experience of unconditional love came through our mothers or those who mothered us in their own way. Some offered it through gentle words and warm meals. Others stood by us silently in our hardest moments. Some of us carry the ache of a mother we have lost, never had, or are still healing from. But even when human love fails or falls short, the deeper truth remains: we are still born of love itself. That love does not abandon us.
To say love is our mother is to remember that we are part of something greater. Love is the force that holds creation together. Love is what helps us rise when life knocks us down. Love is what allows us to see one another with mercy and tenderness, even when the world teaches us to be guarded and afraid.
This Mother’s Day, whether you are celebrating with joy, holding space for grief, or sitting with a mixture of emotions, know this:
You were born of love.
You belong to love.
You are made to live in love.
Let us give thanks for our mothers and for all who have offered us love, guidance, and care. Let us give thanks for the love that created us, heals us, and teaches us how to be human.
Happy Mother’s Day.
